Mahahual, Q.R. — A young cougar was killed Wednesday outside Mahahual when it was hit by a car. The speeding driver of the vehicle did not stop. Other motorists who witnessed the highway hit and run made the report to local authorities.
Personnel from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection and the Institute of Biodiversity and Natural Areas of Quintana Roo responded to the call. They found the deceased female laying on the road along a section of the Cafetal-Mahahual highway, a short distance from the town.
The cougar’s body was transferred by staff from the Institute of Biodiversity and Natural Areas of Quintana Roo where they will perform an autopsy and study tests to learn more about the species.
Police were not involved in the incident involving the cougar. Charges are unlikely.
