Riviera Maya, Q.R. — An updated Section 5 of the Maya Train project has a station for Grupo Xcaret. The layout has been confirmed by Rogelio Jiménez Pons, director of the National Tourism Development Fund (Fonatur), who says that the stations will be financed with state resources.
According to Fonatur, the Xcaret junction will also have modifications to improve traffic. The station project will consist of the expansion of the vehicular overpass along with the length of the ramps and junction exits.
The news comes after Grupo Xcaret has sought to be included in the Maya Train project since March.
Lilia González, territorial link for the Tren Maya in Quintana Roo, indicated that the decision was made due to the demand for mobility in the area. “Since there are no nearby communities or public tourist attractions, the decision was made to include the stations,” noting thousands make their way to the parks of Xcaret as Xenses as well as to the park’s hotel.
Carlos Constandse, vice president and founder of Xcaret, commented that the flow of European tourists was significantly reduced this year so the station could help.
“If we manage to increase European tourism, it would surely be through the Maya Train because it could reach Cancun and then cover the entire peninsula,” he said.
