Work on Chetumal’s Bahia Boulevard continues but months behind schedule

Chetumal, Q.R. — While some advancements on the remodeling of Bahia Boulevard continue, some say the project will likely drag on into the next administration. Adrián Sánchez Dominguez, Othón P Blanco City Council General Secretary, says they still do not have a completion date for the Boulevard.

He says it is very likely that, given the constant delays, the Ministry of Public Works (Seop) will inherit the unfinished project in the next administration. Dominguez says talks regarding the ongoing delays have been held with William Conrado Alarcón, the Secretary of Public Works, where he learned extensive fines are one reason for the hold up.

At the beginning of this year, the State Secretariat of Public Works was fined more than 452,000 peso for the felling of 75 established trees.

“The project should have been finished in March,” Dominguez clarified. He says that “months have passed and it is still not finished, in view of everything, we calculate about two or three more months at a forced pace to be able to finish it,” he said.

If not, Dominguez says it will be up to the new administration to finish the remodeling of the Boulevard.

On June 12, Governor Carlos Joaquin visited the Chetumal project. On social media, Joaquin said “I took a walk along the Boulevard of Chetumal…new infrastructure, with new pavement, sidewalks, walkways, high-tech public lighting, tables and chairs, new statues and sculptures, cultural and tourist areas. A great work for Chetumal families.”
