In a public statement, the FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado) identified those in custody as Gilberto “N”, the current mayor of Puerto Aventuras, Karla Paola “N”, an official in the Economic Development Department, and Jorge “N”, a nephew of Gilberto “N”.

According to their investigation, the events occurred in the town of Puerto Aventuras earlier this year when personnel from the Puerto Aventuras mayor’s office allegedly visited a business located in the Puerto Maya neighborhood.

At that location, they demand that the victim regularize his business status and contact Karla Paola “N”, an official in the Economic Development Department of the municipality.

On January 19, the victim went to the office to fill out the paperwork and make a payment. There, they were warned that if they didn’t pay, their merchandise would be confiscated and they wouldn’t be allowed to sell it.

“It should be noted that this form is free,” the FGE reported.

“When the victim did not return to pay, on February 6, two motorcycle taxis arrived at the establishment with six people including Jorge “N”, who allegedly told him that by order of Gilberto “N”, all the vendors had to report or else “they were going to pick them up”, threatening the victim that he would return to “beat them up” if he did not report to Karla Paola “N”.

“On February 11, 2026, the victim went again to the offices of Karla Paola “N”, who made him fill out a document and make a payment, assuring him that said document would provide him with protection while Gilberto “N” remained in office.

“Subsequently, on May 7, Jorge “N” allegedly arrived at the victim’s business with two other people on a motorcycle taxi.

“Despite having already made a previous payment, he demanded another weekly payment, threatening to remove the victim from the premises and beat him, stating that he and his uncle were the ones who made the rules in the area. The victim began making these payments from that date onward,” authorities said.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the FGE requested an arrest warrant which was executed against Gilberto “N”, Karla Paola “N” and Jorge “N”, who are facing charges of aggravated extortion.
