Chetumal, Q.R. — Two people were killed Saturday after a Chetumal combi fell onto its side after being struck by a taxi. The accident happened on Luis Manuel Sevilla Avenue in the América 1 residential neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
A taxi wanting to enter the main Avenue by a retorno took the turn but failed to see the oncoming combi. The impact from the taxi hit caused the public transport van to fall onto its side.
During the fall, a 10-year-old girl went through a side window and ended up crushed under the weight of the combi van. Witnesses rushed to the scene to upright the van, however, her injuries were extensive and she died at the scene.
An ambulance was called to transport the girl’s mother to hospital, who was also a passenger on the van, however, she is reported to have died before arriving.
There are reports that the taxi’s breaks failed. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fatal accident and the possible mechanical failure of the taxi.
