Two killed and residents left without power in single vehicle rollover

Chetumal, Q.R. — Two people were killed from a pickup truck rollover in the city of Chetumal early Friday. The single vehicle accident happened before daybreak off Universidad Avenue.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His male front seat passenger was rushed to hospital where he died shortly after arriving. Witnesses who watched the out-of-control vehicle reported seeing it speeding before the driver lost control and rolled.

The new model pickup was found laying on its roof after, according to eye witnesses, it rolled three times before being stopped by a city pole. The accident caused a major power outage in a large section of Chetumal Friday morning.

Emergency services arrived at the darkened scene of the accident to a crushed driver and a seriously injured passenger. The totaled vehicle came to a stop near the intersection of  Universidad Avenue and Aquiles Serdán Street.

Nearby neighbors who heard the commotion called 9-1-1. Paramedics, firemen and police were at the scene where they closed the road to traffic. At least two power poles were hit by the truck that also left a set of lines laying on the city sidewalk. CFE personnel were eventually brought in to repair the affected poles and restore power to the area.
