Two dead and 8 injured in Playa del Carmen hotel gas explosion

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A gas explosion in the kitchen of a Playa del Carmen hotel restaurant has reportedly killed two and injured numerous others. According to local authorities, two people are confirmed dead and at least eight have been injured in the Monday afternoon explosion at Kool Beach Club Boutique Hotel.

Police and Civil Protection personnel were on scene along with ambulances as they sifted through debris at the 28th Street seaside beach club hotel. The blast ripped through the hotel, collapsing a concrete wall which is said to have crushed the two people who were found dead at the scene.

The strong explosion also destroyed part of an adjacent building and caught a small palapa roof on fire. The area was roped off while emergency services attended to the injured. The Ministry of Public Security arrived with two trained dogs to help search for trapped people.

Playa del Carmen mayor Lili Campos Miranda stated that they will review the situation of the hotel to see if it was up to date with its Civil Protection requirements and safety regulations.

On social media, Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, Secretary of State Public Security out of Cancun posted, “Emergency services coordinated by C5, attend to the explosion of a gas tank in the kitchen of the Kool restaurant in Playa del Carmen, information in progress.”

The FGE also made a social post regarding the situation clarifying that “the FGE of Quintana Roo has started an investigation for the gas leak explosion recorded in the kitchen of a restaurant in the beach area of the municipality of Solidaridad. Emergency teams arrived at the scene to help the victims. Two people are reported dead and 8 injured (preliminary information).”
