Tulum, Q.R. — Tulum’s tourism crisis continues to deepen with the announcement of another airline cancellation. Now Volaris airlines says they too, will stop operating their Tulum International flights starting early 2027.

Tulum International has seen a drastic decrease in passenger traffic over the past year.
As of January 7, 2027, Volairs Airlines will stop offering service to the Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Volaris said they made the decision based on current market conditions as well as increases in airport fees and other costs.
“We have had to review the profitability of our routes and temporarily suspend certain flights with lower load factors including our operations to and from Tulum starting January 7, 2027.
“Consequently, we will stop selling tickets for flights after that date this weekend,” Volaris confirmed.
Volaris is the second airline in recent weeks to announce their intention to cease operations at the Tulum International airport. Last week, Aeromexico said they would no longer be offering flights into Tulum as of September 30.
Aeromexico did also say that their suspension of operations into Tulum International was temporary, however, they did not provide a possible resumption date.
This latest announcement from Volaris adds pressure to Tulum who has been attempting to recover their occupancy rates after losing international tourism appeal. High prices, corruption and international competition have been cited as some reasons for the lack of tourists choosing Tulum.

Volaris Airlines flew into Tulum International from Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA). The fewer flights and subsequent fewer available seats will even further reduce the options for tourists to reach Tulum.
