Tulum, Q.R. — What’s left of low season tourism in Tulum will take another hit with the announcement of one less airline. Aeroméxico says they intend to pack their bags and and leaves Tulum International due to low demand.
The airline began flying into Tulum International in December 2023 and confirmed their intention to suspend all flights as of September 30, 2026.
“We are implementing a temporary suspension. September 30 will be the last day. Operations are being suspended due to market conditions and to maximize our route network,” Aeroméxico said in a statement.
The Tulum airport is managed by Grupo Mundo Maya and quickly reached the one-million-passenger mark between domestic and international routes, however, the elimination of airline subsidies, common in the industry when a new airport or route launches, led to the cancellation of flights over the past year.
The lack of tourism to the region has also had an impact on airline decisions to suspend flights into Tulum International.
Aeroméxico has confirmed that September 30 will be its final operating day at Tulum International and described the suspension as temporary. Aeroméxico said the decision reflected market conditions and its efforts to maximize the performance of its wider route network.
The airline is the latest to call it quits less than three years after the opening of the Tulum airport. The airport, located in the neighboring municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, was built to provide direct air access to the rapidly expanding Riviera Maya destination so travelers would not have to drive the nearly two hours south after landing at Cancun International.
The Tulum airport initially attracted a significant list of carriers of both domestic and international airlines, including flights from the United States, Canada and Mexico.
