Akumal, Q.R. — An Akumal hotel construction project reported to authorities by condo owners has been shut down. The Directorate of Territorial and Sustainable Urban Development of Tulum placed closure seals on the area Tuesday.

Municipal inspectors, lead by Tulum Urban Development Director Gregorio Hernández, were at the site in response to resident complaints from the Aventuras Akumal condominium complex who reported the illegal demolition.
The project that has been closed consists of a beach bar within a disputed area between the hotel and the condo complex. Municipal inspectors arrived after the complaint against the hotel, alleging unauthorized construction in a space the owners consider common with their condominium.
After inspectors placed closed seals on the project, workers reportedly covered the seals with rubble to continue work, according to witnesses.

The condo owners have accused the hotel of land grabbing, illegal construction, and possible collusion with authorities in a years-long conflict stemming from the expansion of the hotel into areas they claim are part of their original boundaries.
