Thieves hit Cancun mall jewelry store for a second time

Cancun, Q.R. — Thieves in the process of robbing a Cancun mall jewelry store Sunday were interrupted by police. A red code was activated around 7:00 p.m. in response to the business robbery inside the mall.

The group were inside the store breaking display cases with a hammer as police arrived. They were successful in fleeing and avoiding police capture. In their haste to get away, a hammer that was being used to break the display casings was left behind.

Authorities began a search operation for the group of thieves, but have not announced arrests.

Cancun Police made a brief statement Sunday night regarding the attempted robbery.

“The Quintana Roo Citizen Security Secretariat reports that around 7:00 p.m., a Code Red order was activated after receiving a report of an attempted robbery at a jewelry store located in Plaza las Américas.

“Authorities from all levels of government immediately implemented a search and rescue operation, securing the entire area. Thanks to the swift response of the authorities, the robbery was prevented.

“The alleged offenders left behind a hammer they had used to break the jewelry store’s display cases. Security measures were put in place in the area in search of the alleged perpetrators,” the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) said.

It is the second time the same store has been the target of mall jewelry thieves. In January, thieves also tried to break into the store but were unsuccessful.
