Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun are continuing their investigation into an attempted jewelry store robbery. Armed men reportedly entered the store inside Plaza Las Americas Tuesday night where they threatened employees.
Shouts from store staff thwarted the 8:00 p.m. robbery attempt, causing the three would-be thieves to run off. Amid the chaos, a shot was heard, prompting the arrival of mall security personnel. Those responsible escaped on a motorcycle.
Municipal Police and the State Attorney General’s Office interviewed the employees who told police the thieves tried to break the store’s glass but were unable.
Police carried out a search operation but the men made a clean getaway. Surveillance cameras are being used in their investigation. In a statement, the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) reported on the attempted robbery.
“The Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana de Quintana Roo reports a robbery in Plaza de las Américas is foiled. After the report of an attempted robbery in a jewelry store inside Plaza las Américas in Cancun, it is reported that when the emergency alarms were activated, the subjects fled without achieving their objective.
“The authorities activated the search and location protocols in the area with the participation of the security departments of the three levels of Government.
