Chetumal, Q.R. — A suspect in the kidnapping of two Chetumal men was killed during a police pursuit Sunday. Three SSC police officers were injured in the afternoon chase that resulted in one arrest and release of the two kidnapped men.

According to the State Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), the incident was reported in the Barrio Bravo neighborhood of Chetumal where, around 3:30 p.m., two men were abducted. Police began a search operation for the involved vehicle with at least two armed men on board.
Once located, a pursuit ensued along several residential streets that ended in extensive gunfire. The hood and windshield of one of the police units was hit numerous times, while the other police unit was involved in a collision. Two officers inside that police unit were injured in the crash. One other officer was taken to hospital for a firearm injury during the chase. It is not clear if he was injured while inside the police unit or outside.
The SSC said they are investigating the Sunday afternoon incident that left one gunman dead.
“This afternoon, a report of armed individuals and allegedly two individuals deprived of their liberty was received in the Barrio Bravo neighborhood of Chetumal. The corresponding protocols were activated and a joint operation began with the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office, Municipal Police, Sedena, National Guard and the Navy.

“Following a chase, two individuals were rescued, one of the possible suspects was arrested, and another was killed. During the operation, long weapons, handguns exclusively for the military, drugs and vehicles were seized.

“It was confirmed that two SSC members were injured in a collision, and one more was injured due to a firearm. The support units are available for the corresponding investigation.”
Reports say the two abducted men were members of a criminal gang that operates in Chetumal and were kidnapped by members from an opposing cell.
