Chetumal, Q.R. — Two people were injured Thursday morning in a single vehicle crash when their car caught fire. Witnesses reported seeing the driver of the car crash while street racing with another vehicle.
Chetumal firemen were first on the scene in response to reports of the burning car. The accident happened near the intersection of Pucté Avenue and Universidad Avenue where the driver was taken into custody.
The car was found burning off Avenida Universidad where the driver of the gray Mini Cooper lost control and went off the road. The car crashed through several trees and ended up engulfed in flames.

According to information from the authorities, the combination of high speed and wet pavement are likely what caused the driver to skid.
The two occupants managed to get out in time and call for help before the fire spread.
Firemen extinguished the fire within a few minutes. Medical personnel assessed the two from inside the car. They were found with only minor injuries.
The driver was arrested from the scene.
