SSC reports transfer of nearly 100 inmates from Cancun to Chetumal

Chetumal, Q.R. — Nearly 100 prisoners were transferred from Cancun to Chetumal late Wednesday night to alleviate over crowding. The SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana de Q.Roo) reported the transfer to strengthen governance and security in the Penitentiary Centers of Quintana Roo.

According to their statement, more than 90 prisoners were removed from the Cancun system and transferred to the Othón P. Blanco Penitentiary Center in Chetumal. The transfers were made to depressurize the workload of state prisons.

The SSC says the transfers, carried out by bus, was in adherence to the instructions of the National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH).

In an official statement, the agency reported “the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) carried out actions to strengthen governance and security in the Penitentiary Centers of Quintana Roo, for which it developed the transfer of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PPL).

“Around 90 inmates were transferred from the Benito Juárez Penitentiary Center to the Othón P. Blanco Penitentiary Center with the objective of depressurizing the workload of the prisons in the state, for a dignified confinement.

“The transfer was carried out by land and in strict adherence to the instructions of the CNDH (Comisión Estatal de Derechos Humanos).

“In the procedure, elements of the Penitentiary Police of the SSC and the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) collaborated, in order to safeguard order and security.”
