Son killed, police officer hospitalized after Chetumal ambush

Chetumal, Q.R. — A Chetumal police officer remains in hospital after he was injured and his son killed. The pair were arriving home on a motorcycle Wednesday night when they were ambushed.

Neighbors said armed men appeared from behind overgrown bushes and opened fire against the bike. Both the officer, Azariel “N” and his son were shot several times outside their home on 9th Street North in the Flamingos IV subdivision of Chetumal.

City officers began a search operation for the shooters in response to an emergency 9-1-1 report made by neighbors. While authorities searched, the injured police officer was taken to hospital with four bullet wounds. His 14-year-old son was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two people are reported to have been arrested in relation to the shooting after authorities used city surveillance cameras to track the getaway car. Two men were reported taken into custody in the Pacto Obrero residential area of Chetumal after police located the white Fiat getaway vehicle.
