Secretary of Tourism reports over 4.8 million employed in sector

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico says more than 4.8 million locals are employed in the tourist sector around the country. According to Secretary Miguel Torruco Marqués, as of the first quarter of the year, 4,831,000 people across Mexico hold tourist-related jobs.

Torruco Marqués says this figure represents an increase of 0.6 percent compared to the previous quarter and represented 9 percent of national employment.

He pointed out that between January-March 2024, the number of people employed in the sector producing tourism goods and services increased by 3.3 percent compared to the same period in 2023.

He highlighted that in the first quarter of 2024, tourism employment exceeded the historical figure recorded for personnel employed in the tourism sector by 7.7 percent in the first quarter of 2020.

Torruco Marqués pointed out that in its annual comparison, an increase of 153,333 more people employed in the sector producing tourism goods and services was observed, which represents a growth of 3.3 percent more compared to the first quarter of 2023.

The calculation of Tourism Employment for the first quarter of 2024 was carried out based on the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (New edition) (ENOEN) of the INEGI and the methodology approved by the Specialized Technical Committee of Economic Statistics of the Tourism Sector (CTEEEST).
