Cancun, Q.R. — The second four-car train sent from Sahagún, Hidalgo has arrived in Cancun. The cars were officially received in the Cancun Tren Maya yard around noon Tuesday.
They arrived October 31 as planned after leaving Hidalgo October 25. The cars are being stored at the Tren Maya station behind the Cancun International Airport along with the first set that arrived in early July.
Maite Ramos Gómez, the Director of Alstom México, reported Monday morning that the 49-ton package of cars was scheduled to arrive in Cancun the following day. One unwrapped, the new cars will also be tested prior to the December 15 inauguration of the Tren Maya project.
Due to construction setbacks, the Quintana Roo Tren Maya route will not be put into passenger operation until early 2024.
Last month, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that on December 15, only the Palenque to Cancun section of train would be inaugurated.
In October, AMLO said construction on section 5 will be extended to the end of January 2024, the month in which the section from Cancun to Tulum is expected to be finished.
He reported that “section 5 has been more complex than imagined”. In attempting to avoid underwater rivers and cenotes, more than 80 kilometers of overpasses are being built, which he called “a very complicated project”.
