Costa Maya, Q.R. — An extensive search has ended with the finding of a young girl missing for a week. The 13-year-old was reported missing by her family on May 10. She was found alive May 17.

The girl, Iris “C”, was found during a jungle foot search that included personnel from the Fire Department, the Navy, National Defense and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).

According to a statement from the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) of Qunitana Roo, the 13 year old girl “was located by elements of the Rural Police and canine pairs from the Quintana Roo Citizen Security Secretariat on the Chetumal – Huay Pix highway.”

The agency reported that she was found safe and sound and transferred by ambulance for medical care.

According to the SSC, she was found by the search dogs used Wednesday. When found, she was noted to be dehydrated and with insect bites and a small wound that “did not present a risk to her life.”

She was carried out of the jungle by one of the search and rescue team members. Her parents were notified she had been found. Police did not provide any background information as to how the child became to be reported as missing or how she survived in the jungle for a week alone.
