Riviera Maya highway worker killed after being struck by Tulum taxi

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A construction worker was killed Monday on a Riviera Maya highway near Punta Venado. The unidentified man was working on a section of Maya Train when he was struck by a car.

The accident was reported by passing motorists around 9:00 a.m. who saw the construction worker hit by a Tulum taxi. The worker was in the central median of the highway when a Tulum taxi suddenly came toward him, running him over and killing him.

According to preliminary information, the driver of the Tulum taxi dozed off behind the wheel which caused him to swerve. His unit ended up swerving into the highway median in a zoned off area for construction workers.

The impact of the taxi against the concrete median caused the unit to overturn and skid before finally coming to a rest in the opposite lane. Solidaridad Transit Officers were sent to the scene along with an ambulance.

Responding medical personnel pronounced the young worker on scene. There was no word on possible charges against the Tulum taxi driver.
