Chetumal, Q.R. — More than a dozen firefighters were at an open dump site in Chetumal early Saturday afternoon. Thick smoke could be seen from kilometers away as garbage burned out of control.

The fire was reported around mid-day by nearby residents who also expressed their concern about the toxic smoke. Eye and nose irritants were the most reported issue to local authorities, reported Chetumal Civil Protection.
The fire was attended to by personnel from the Chetumal Fire Department, as well as units from the Navy, Promocasa, and Civil Protection who spent several hours at the site. Officials have not provided a cause for the fire that burned the entire afternoon and into the evening.
