Chetumal, Q.R. — A Chetumal pedestrian was killed Monday night when he was struck by a city cab. Residents in the Forjadores neighborhood watched as the driver of the responsible taxi kept going.
Witnesses called emergency services around 9:30 p.m. to report the accident. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene on Enrique Barocio Street where they found a male pedestrian laying off the road.
Medical personnel pronounced the elderly man dead at the scene. Eye witnesses to the fatal hit and run were able to provide police with the taxi’s unit number. Police have also collected information from local security cameras to help in their investigation in locating the vehicle.
Initial reports say the driver of the taxi was speeding through the neighborhood attempting to use his cell phone when he struck the man. The man was walking toward his home at the time of the accident.
Police from the Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC) are searching for the vehicle.
