Police say drug dealing line of investigation in targeted Chetumal shooting

Chetumal, Q.R. — Forensic personnel collected spent shell casings from a Chetumal street Friday. The casings were from the attempted shooting of a Chetumal man Friday morning.

The victim, a male who has not been named, was wounded by gunfire and taken to a Chetumal hospital. City police were notified of the public shooting around 11:40 a.m. on Benito Juárez Avenue.

At the scene, they found spent shell casings at the intersection with Mahatma Gandhi Street. One person believed to have been the target of that attack was found shot. A second person who was reported with him, was found unharmed.

Police collected casings from the street as well as bullets that becamed lodged in vehicles and buildings during the attack.

Eye witnesses reported men in two vehicles, a blue pickup and a white car, wearing tactical gear as responsible for the shooting.

In their desperation, the victims tried to take refuge by running inside a business, however, one was hit by the spray of bullets. Police say they are continuing their investigation into the Friday morning attack.

“The FGE Quintana Roo reports that, as a result of the events recorded this morning in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, a person was injured by a firearm and was transferred to a hospital where he received specialized medical care,” the agency reported.

“From the first moment, this social representation began the corresponding investigations to clarify what happened through the relevant investigative acts and expert procedures.

“According to the first investigations, the incident could be related to drug dealing. Likewise, we work in a coordinated manner with various institutions with the aim of locating whoever is responsible.
