Police say double Chetumal murder believed drug related

Chetumal, Q.R. — State officials have started an investigation into the double murder of two people inside a Chetumal home. According to the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), two people were shot to death at a home in the Américas II neighborhood.

The deadly shooting is believed to be drug related.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning when armed men approached the home and opened fire. A total of three people were shot. Seriously injured was 36-year-old Efrain “R”.

One of the deceased is reported to be 55-year-old Arturo “S” who, according to reports, was the father-in-law of Efrain “R”. A third unidentified man was also shot. He died from his injuries.

The three men were outside the home around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when the shooting began. They attempted to run inside for cover, but were hit by bullets outside. Family members from inside the home called 9-1-1.

Neighbors on San José Street reported seeing two non-resident men “hanging around” the area prior to the shooting. Those responsible are reported to have escaped in a Aveo car toward another subdivision of the same area.

A search operation for the shooters was implemented but without success.

In a statement made late Sunday night, the FGE reported they “opened an investigation in order to identify and capture those responsible for a qualified double homicide that took place in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.

“This autonomous body reports that one of the main lines of investigation related to this incident is linked to crimes against health, specifically in the form of drug dealing.

“The FGE, in coordination with the security authorities located in the municipality, work to maintain peace in the state.”
