Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Heavy rains are expected Wednesday for Cancun and Riviera Maya ahead of the arrival of another cold front. A mass of polar air from the U.S. is making its way toward the Yucatan Peninsula. Once it arrives, Cold Front No. 14 is forecast to leave the region chilled for several days.
The Quintana Roo State Civil Protection Coordination posted a cold weather notice Tuesday. “Due to the movement of Cold Front No. 14 and the prefrontal trough (low pressure channel), an increase in cloudiness, very heavy to intense rains (75-150 mm) and electrical activity are expected in a large part of the state starting on Wednesday, December 11 and during Thursday, December 12.
“Wind gusts of 50 to 70 kms/h coming from the north and northeast will affect the coasts of Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres and Benito Juárez. Those winds are expected to decrease on Saturday.
“Temperatures of cool to cold overnight and at dawn between Friday 13 and Sunday 15 are expected, especially in rural areas,” the Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo reported.
Local meteorologists have warned that the state could experience an unusually chilly 2024-2025 winter with temperatures dipping down as low as 10C (50F).
