Pok Ta Pok residents collect signatures to keep golf course green

Cancun, Q.R. — Area residents of the Pok Ta Pok golf course collected signatures Tuesday to keep the space recreational. Neighbors adjacent to the golf course signed up in favor of preserving the property as a natural recreation area.

The signatures were collected in order to prevent a large real estate development from taking over the green space.

“All persons interested in maintaining the Pok Ta Pok golf course as a natural recreation area and defending the environment are invited to sign the document that was prepared by the Association of Hotels of Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres,” the public announcement read.

The Association said the collection of signatures was for the general public “in favor of Pok Ta Pok to take the corresponding legal actions and defend the heritage of the common good, as well as the environment.”

Signatures were collected Tuesday afternoon at the security booth at the entrance to Pok Ta Pok Avenue. Those involved said it is necessary to sign the document since there were irregularities in the purchase of the land.

Area residents are fighting back against the new land owners who have been trying to get approval to build a large commercial-residential real estate development on the former golf course.

Since 2022, the company has submitted their environmental paperwork to the government twice for approval. They have been declined both times.
