Playa del Carmen records its fourth Blue Flag beach

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Another Playa del Carmen beach has qualified for Blue Flag status. On Tuesday, Lourdes Varguez Ocampo, Director the Federal Maritime and Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) for Solidaridad announced that Playa Pelicano has qualified.

She said the beach, which is located on 40th Street, was certified after meeting the 33 required criteria for the Blue Flag.

“This is wonderful news, especially since when we sent the file to request the certification, we did not hear any news about the Blue Flag, but it passed without comments or observations,” she explained.

Ocampo said the process to qualify the beach began last year with improving the water quality and the addition of infrastructure that included all the needed services.

Ocampo says the municipality is “very happy to have a fourth beach,” adding that “we are planning two more beaches.”

The municipality’s other three Blue Flag beaches include Playa Xcalacoco, Playa Punta Esmeralda and Playa 88.
