Passerby finds bagged body on Chetumal street

Chetumal, Q.R. — UPDATED: Authorities in Chetumal have located what is believed to be the body of a prison guard who went missing Tuesday. A bagged body was located early Wednesday on Siglo XXI Street in Colonia Milenio of Chetumal.

The body is believed to be that of Chetumal prison guard Angel “N. He was an active guard at the Social Reinsertion Center (Cereso) of Chetumal, a position he also once held in Cancun.

He was forcefully removed from his private vehicle in broad daylight Tuesday afternoon by four armed men before being driven away to an unknown location. Police began a search for the guard Tuesday after receiving reports of the abduction.

A bagged body was located early Wednesday by a passerby. According to preliminary information, the body was found wrapped in plastic bags next to a cardboard threat message signed by a criminal group.

Personnel from the army and state police were at the scene along with forensics in the still-dark hours of Wednesday morning. The body was removed from the street. Police have not yet made an official identification.

UPDATE JANUARY 23: Local authorities have confirmed the body found was that of the missing prison guard. The body of Angel “N” was found early Wednesday on Siglo XXI Street in Colonia Milenio of Chetumal, a day after he was forcefully removed from his private vehicle in a broad daylight abduction.
