Parents and students at Puerto Aventuras high school demand dismissals after allegation of sexual abuse

Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — Students from the José Antonio Tzuc Esparza Technical High School protested Wednesday after a classmate came forward with sexual abuse and harassment allegations.

The unnamed classmate made the allegations against a teacher at the Puerto Aventuras high school. Protesting students and some of their parents were outside the school around 9:00 a.m. demanding the resignation of both the school’s director and deputy director.

Students and parents voiced their concern at the most recent allegation, saying it was not the first time that particular teacher has been accused of sexual harassment against a student. For this reason, they also demanded the removal of the unidentified teacher from the school.

Javier Basurto Campos who heads the Human Development Education Directorate of Solidaridad, arrived to speak with the protesting group. Elements of the municipality’s Public Security Secretariat eventually arrived at the school to follow up on the case.

The evening before, the high school suffered vandalism after students spray painted the outside with words such as “rapist”.
