One killed another seriously injured in Maya Train accident

La Placa, Chiapas — Two men who are reported to have fallen asleep on a section of Tren Maya tracks were hit early Monday. One of the two men, both of whom are reported to be Honduran migrants, died.

The accident happened on a Palenque-Escárcega section of new Tren Maya tracks between the towns of La Placa and Río Chinal, Chiapas. The two migrant men were sleeping between the tracks of section 1 when the train passed over them early Monday morning.

One man was killed. The other was rushed to hospital with an amputated left arm among other injuries. The surviving man has been identified as 16-year-old Orlin “A”.

The Maya Train driver notified emergency services of the accident who in response, sent National Guard to the site.

Personnel from the Mexican Red Cross and Civil Protection also arrived confirming the death of one of the migrants while transferring the other to a hospital in Palenque.

Elements from the Secretariat of National Defense and personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office arrived to cordon off the area in addition to closing the site.

Forensic personnel were requested to lift the remains of the victim, who has not yet been identified.
