Cancun, Q.R. — In an official announcement Wednesday, Cancun Tourist Police head César Augusto Escamilla Pacheco was replaced by officer Karina Cabrera Rodríguez.
The change was announced Wednesday night by the Benito Juárez City Council and occurs a month after two public protests involving hundreds of Cancun taxi drivers who demanded the dismissal of Escamilla Pacheco.
The taxi drivers demanded his dismissal after allegations of corruption, accusing the former head of the Tourist Police of extortion by organized crime, which they claimed, required them to pay a fee to be able to operate in the Hotel Zone.
