Mahahual, Q.R. — A catamaran carrying 23 people was rescued by the Mexican Navy Thursday. The afternoon mishap required a Navy vessel to deploy off the coast of Mahahual where it met the stranded catamaran.
According to the Secretary of the Navy, they met the boat after an emergency call requesting assistance for a vessel that was stranded approximately 100 meters from the Mahahual fishing pier. On board were 23 people.
Mexican Navy personnel located the boat and returned all 23 to land without incident. According to their report, the catamaran became stranded after becoming grounded due to passenger over capacity.
Once Navy personnel unloaded the catamaran’s passengers onto its vessel, the boat was able to sail back to Mahahual on its own.
