Motorists report second level fire inside Chetumal firehouse

Chetumal, Q.R. — Firemen in Chetumal dealt with their own in-house fire Monday after a floor fan began to burn. The fan was left running unattended when it caught fire.

The burning motor ignited a nearby bed on the second level of the firehouse, causing black smoke to emanate out a window.

Passing motorists snapped shots of the on-fire firehouse and alerted the fire station to the upstairs blaze. The incident happened Monday afternoon at the Chetumal fire station on Insurgentes Avenue and Constituyentes.

Since firemen were on site, they were quick to put out the burning mattress, but not before it was completely eaten by the blaze. Only the metal bed frame was left.

There were no injuries reported. Firefighters managed to put out the fire in a few minutes, preventing the flames from spreading to other areas of the station. The incident caused minor damage in the dormitory area.

Authorities said that internal inspections are already being carried out to rule out possible additional failures in the electrical system and to reinforce security measures in the facilities.
