Ministry of National Defense to be in charge of Maya Train, airports

Tulum, Q.R. — During his Sunday visit to Tulum, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that a company of the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA) will be in charge of several sections of the Maya Train as well as airports.

AMLO said that they plan to hand over sections 1, 6 and 7 of the Maya Train to the SEDENA company and that they will also operate the future Tulum International Airport, the modernization of the Chetumal International Airport and the Felipe Ángeles Airport in Mexico City.

“The sections from Palenque to Tulum will be managed by a company of military origin so that it is self-sufficient and that the profits are used to strengthen the finances and retirees of the Armed Forces, the Ministry of the Navy and Defense,” he explained, adding that the second purpose is “to guarantee security in the southeast region.”

He said they are still in the planning phase which would see a holding company operate the projects. He also announced the first operation of the Maya Train will be in 2023, in addition to confirming the construction of the Riviera Maya (Tulum) airport by the army.
