Chetumal, Q.R. — A shootout between Mexican soldiers and a criminal gang was reported Friday night near the community of La Union. The area, which is located along the banks of the Hondo River along the border with Belize, was being patrolled by Mexican soldiers.
While patrolling the area, soldiers came upon a group of vehicles traveling along the road. When asked to stop, those from inside opened fire and speed away. Soldiers repelled the shots, however, the vehicles kept going.
Those inside eventually ditched their vehicles and continued on foot into the jungle. Authorities began a search, but were unable to locate them. It is believed the group crossed the border into Belize.
Mexican authorities were able to seize the vehicles and firearms that were left behind.
