Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says that 70 percent of section 5 of the Maya Train will be elevated. He explained the decision to elevate the section on Tuesday during his morning press conference.
Section 5, which runs from Cancun to Tulum, is divided into two sections. Section 5 north which will run around 50 kilometers of track from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and then section 5 south, which will see around 60 kilometers of track laid between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
Both sections will be built by different companies. During his Tuesday announcement, López Obrador explained the decision to elevate section 5 south was made so as to not affect the underground cenotes and rivers.
“Only 30 percent is being built at ground level with an embankment. The nature of the area is not affected at all,” he reported Tuesday morning adding that “70 percent is a platform, like a concrete viaduct, to release all the underground rivers, cenotes (…) so that people know that all underground and rivers and cenotes are not affected.”
