Mahahual volunteers collect more than 600 kilos of washed up sea garbage from other countries

Mahahual, Q.R. — More than 600 kilos of washed up sea garbage was collected by Mahahual volunteers. Volunteers from Proyecto AAk Mahahual spent the day collecting the beach garbage, which they say, arrives mostly by sea.

The group made efforts to clear Mahahual beaches of garbage to provide a safer environment for arriving sea turtles. While nesting began early in other parts of the state, May 1 generally marks the official start of sea turtle nesting season.

During their half-day clean, more than 600 kilos of garbage was collected from the Punta Pulticub beach area. Members of the beach clean posted photos of their finds, which included plastic bottles from Haiti and Asia.

Another beach clean is planned for next weekend to remove garbage before the arrival of the sea turtles.
