Mahahual, Q.R. — Mahahual authorities have asked to have their anti-sargassum barriers installed in March rather than in May. Mahahual mayor William Calderon said although the barriers are usually installed in the month of May, this year, they are asking the navy to install them during the month of March to deal with the early arrival.
Some parts of the state’s coast has already begun to see the arrival of sargassum. Some areas have a heavier flow than others, placing a need for the installation of the sargassum barriers early.
“They told us that of the barriers that were installed last year, which were 700 meters, today we have 700 more meters, double that of last year,” he said.
Calderon said that the request has already been formally made, noting that forecasts are calling for a heavy sargassum season this year. He says that they are working on logistics and personnel for the manual cleaning of Mahahual beaches.
