Mahahual, Q.R. — At least two cruise ships have changed their itineraries and not docked at Puerto Costa Maya of Mahahual after a conflict between taxi drivers and business owners the day before saw hundreds of cruise ship passengers temporarily refused entrance into the town.
Both Celebrity Edge and Norwegian Escape changed their scheduled itineraries, bypassing the small seaside town of Mahahual after a conflict erupted between Joaquín Hendricks Díaz taxi drivers and business owners who allegedly wanted the passengers to shop at the dock and not be taken into town by the taxi drivers.
The disruption caused a great deal of confusion for cruise ship passengers who recorded the event and posted it to social media, noting that for several minutes, they were prevented from leaving the dock area for the village of Mahahual by private security. They were eventually granted passage.
However, due to the previous events, captains from both cruise ships were instructed to continue straight ahead, bypassing Mahahual to avoid risks to their passengers. Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas is also scheduled to stop at Puerto Costa Maya. There is no official word on if they too, will cancel.
