Mahahual company workers protest lack of mandatory profit sharing

Mahahual, Q.R. — A group of company workers blocked a Mahahual road Monday to protest their lack of bonus payment. Workers from Mayan Connection closed access to the Costa Maya cruise port over the company issue.

Workers said they blocked the road as a way to protest for not having received any profit sharing. They prevented vehicle access at entrance to the port area, preventing workers and vehicles from coming or going.

The angry men and woman said the company tried to give them a compensatory “bonus” after having presented its tax return with zero profit, however, the workers were not happy with the offer.

“They tried to buy us off with a bond and the excuse was that there were no profits, but we see the cruise ship traffic every day. We know there is income,” said one protester.

Company workers were also upset since, according to them, they were forced to sign a new contract. Their current company changed its corporate name, which meant losing seniority and economic benefits.
