Mahahual, Q.R. — Mahahual hotel owners are expressing their concern about the arrival of sargassum and the lack of collection effectiveness by the Secretary of the Navy (Semar), which they say, will affect the image of the tourist destination during the reactivation process.
Gerardo Pérez, local hotel owner, confirmed that business owners and residents of Mahahual have taken on the task of cleaning and collecting sargassum themselves due to the lack of support from Semar. He said that the anti-sargassum barriers are not functional in the area where they were installed, which has forced them to relocate them.
He said that so far, they have collected only a few cubic meters of sargassum, but he is concerned about what may happen to Mahahual beaches when the seaweed volumes begin to increase and the barriers continue to fail.
He added that at the moment, a report on the cost of operations that involves having cleaning machinery has stopped “since these resources come from the payment of taxes.”
