Mahahual association reports discovery of shot sea turtle

Mahahual, Q.R. — An ecological association has denounced the discovery of the body of a sea turtle that had been shot and killed. The body of the turtle was discovered two days after they found traces of blood in a nesting area.

On social media, the association Proyecto AAk Mahahual reported the death of the adult female that was eventually discovered. Her shell had several bullet impacts. She was located in colonia Kilómetro 55 of Mahahual.

They reported that she died without laying her eggs. “Here is the evidence and the sad situation of what is happening in Mahahual Costa Maya,” wrote the association. “It should be mentioned that this species was a Loggerhead, and like all sea turtles, are under special protection.”

The group has urged authorities to be more vigilant during this nesting season and for the population not to kill the sea turtles.
