Mexico City, Mexico — On Friday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that sections 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Maya Train will operate electrically. Section 5 (north and south) is the section that runs from Cancun to Tulum .
In a morning conference from the National Palace, López Obrador said that the Maya Train will use two types of energy, a low sulfur diesel and electricity. His announcement confirmed that the Maya Train section to run the entire Yucatan Peninsula, from Merida to Chetumal, will be electric.
Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama also posted the news on social media. “Our President Lopez Obrador announced that the TrenMayaMX will use non-polluting fuel and in sections 3,4,5 and 6 it will operate electrically. The largest mobility project in the southeast in the history of the country is advancing to bring well-being with respect for the environment,” she wrote.
On Thursday, López Obrador announced that the other sections of the Maya Train will be powered through a hybrid energy system that will be supplied by low-sulfur content diesel produced at the Deer Park refinery in Texas, which is now wholly owned by Petróleos Mexicanos.
