Chetumal, Q.R. — Local fishermen pulled two disorientated dogs from Chetumal Bay Sunday. The two dogs were found swimming separately and are believed to have been intentionally dumped in the bay.
One of the dogs was pulled from the water with neck injuries. Both animals have been transferred to a city veterinarian for medical care.
Mayor Yensunni Martínez reported the dogs were found by chance by local fishermen during a weekend water event. According to her, the first dog was found swimming disoriented, drifting further and further from the shore.
Thanks to the quick intervention of a pair of fishermen, the dog was rescued. Minutes later, a second dog was found in the same area with visible wounds on its neck. Both animals were taken to a veterinary clinic for medical care.

Martínez publicly thanked the fishermen who acted to save the animals. She said the city is looking into who intentionally dumped the dogs in the bay, adding that it “will not go unpunished.”
She stressed that animal abuse is a crime and reiterated her administration’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of animals.
