Cancun, Q.R. — State authorities have revoked a Cancun taxi driver’s license after he was videoed driving with a man on his hood. On Thursday night, an altercation between a Cancun taxi driver and private citizens resulted in a citizen being stuck on the hood of the taxi.
The two drivers began to argue on Nichupté Avenue in Cancun around 11:00 p.m. after, according to reports, the taxi driver cut off the car. The passenger from the private vehicle got out to confront the taxi driver which is when the taxi driver sped forward, forcing the man onto the hood of his cab.
Motorists videoed the incident as the Cancun taxi driver sped through city streets for nearly a kilometer before the car came to a stop at a red light. At that moment, the passenger from the private car was able to climb off the hood. He approached the driver’s side door, however, the taxi driver refused to get out.
After seeing the video go viral on social media, authorities from the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo) reported the taxi driver’s concession and license will be revoked.
In a press release, the Director of the Institute, Rodrigo Alcazar Urrutia, reported that he will cancel the driver’s concession and license despite not knowing exactly what happened.
“So far, we only have information from the video that is on social networks. The fact is that behavior is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated to put someone’s life at risk,” he said.
He said that the procedure to cancel the driver’s permanent license and the concession has already begun.
“These events cannot be allowed. As a state concessionaire and as a public service driver, we will never tolerate things getting to this point, transporting a person on the hood and putting their safety at risk. This is a serious offence,” he said.
Imoveqroo located the taxi and have since seized it.
