Letters to the Editor: Longer sargassum barriers needed in Puerto Morelos

I frequently walk the beaches of North Puerto Morelos. This season is the earliest arrival of sargassum since it started. In the section near the Hyatt Hotel (was Secrets Silversands) there is a barrier that extends approximately 100 meters past the hotel just offshore.

When the sargasso floats around the point in front of the hotel the barrier blocks it, but at the end of that barrier, the sargasso makes a 90 degree right turn, and lands directly on the beach.

From there the current carries volumes of sargassum south, and it accumulates all along the beach for 4-5 kilometers, continuing south to the municipal beaches. It happens daily.

If you want to protect the municipal beaches, longer barriers are needed to block sargassum starting from the Hyatt Hotel south past the municipal beaches.
