Kitchen fire causes evacuation of Chetumal daycare

Chetumal, Q.R. — A Chetumal daycare was evacuated Thursday due to a kitchen fire. Chetumal firemen were sent to the Steps Kidzone daycare center on Efraín Aguilar Avenue early Thursday afternoon in response to the fire report.

Personnel from the State Coordination of Civil Protection were also at the scene, evacuating both children and staff while firemen worked to extinguish flames.

Emergency personnel reported a small fire had started in the kitchen of the daycare in, located in the Campestre neighborhood.

Civil Protecion reported briefly on the afternoon fire clarifying it was small and there were no injuries reported during the incident.

“We responded to a report of a small fire in the kitchen of a building located on Efraín Aguilar Avenue in Chetumal.

“The rapid response of firefighters and emergency units allowed for timely assistance; the safe evacuation of all occupants was also carried out. Cooling operations are currently underway.”

In their short briefing, authorities did not say how the fire started nor did they say how many people were in the building at the time of the fire.
