Judge orders Chetumal woman remanded in custody for sexual harassment

Chetumal, Q.R. — A Chetumal woman has been ordered remanded in custody after being charged with sexual harassment. The woman is accused of harassing another woman, the victim, for more than two years.

María Candelaria “N” was charged Thursday in a Chetumal court for ongoing sexual harassment. In a statement, police said she was charged “for her alleged involvement in acts possibly constituting the crime of sexual harassment against a female victim.

She “was formally charged after the State Attorney General’s Office, through the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Sexual Offenses and the Free Development of Personality, provided compelling evidence.”

According to police, María Candelaria “N” began harassing her victim in August 2023, when the victim was heading to a commercial establishment on Petcacab Avenue.

Along the way, María Candelaria “N” is accused of shouting offensive words at her, offering her money in exchange for sexual relations.

Police said the victim ignored her, but this situation was repeated in September 2023, when the victim was in a public park “she shouted insults at her again.”

On the night of October 3, María Candelaria “N” verbally assaulted her again while the woman was in the same public park. “When the victim asked her why she was insulting her, María Candelaria “N” again made a sexual proposition, so the victim told her that she would proceed to report her,” police reported.

On October 15, 2023, María Candelaria “N”, along with a male, approached the victim outside her home in the Territorio Federal neighborhood where she insulted her again.

“The same thing happened on November 11, 2023 and on April 7, 2024, the last time, making sexual gestures toward her. Following a complaint filed by the victim, the Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation, requesting an arrest warrant which was successfully executed by the Investigative Police on February 6 of this year.”
