Intentional burn turns forest fire outside Chiquila

Chiquila, Q.R. — Residents of Chiquila took photos of a distant forest fire that burned Thursday night outside the mainland town. Alejandro Erosa, Director of the Lázaro Cárdenas Fire Department said the fire was being attended to locally.

He said the fire does not pose any threat to establishments and that they have been working tirelessly to ensure it stays that way since flames spread fast to the neighboring San Ángel ejido.

While an exact cause of the fire is not known, Erosa said he suspects an intentional burn by a local farmer likely became out of control.

The Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), Huguette Hernández Gómez, reported that in Quintana Roo this year, 42 fires have burned more than 5,000 hectares, a figure lower than last year where 44 fires and more than 8,000 hectares were affected by fires.
