Imoveqroo clarifies no rate hikes approved for public transport

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) says they have not authorized any public transport rate increases anywhere in the state. Their official statement to clarify was made after numerous reports of public transport drivers charging passengers more.

“In its commitment to promote safety and quality in transportation services, Imoveqroo informs all users of public service that there is no authorization for an increase in the rate, therefore, in no modality and concessionaire may it charge passengers more than what is stipulated in the current rate schedule,” the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) reported Monday.

“The Institute has not approved any rate increase in any form for any concessionaire, so all of these increases, if they occur, would be against the law,” said Luis Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia, the General Director of Imoveqroo.

According to Alcázar Urrutia, an analysis of the rates is currently being carried out, since there has not been an increase for eight years, however, it is only an analysis not an approved increase in fares.

He says Imoveqroo is aware of the increase in operating costs and salaries, “that everything has been on the rise, therefore we are looking for the concessionaire to generate its analysis so that based on this and the requests submitted, it is determined if there will be an increase and how much it would be,” he explained.

Alcázar Urrutia pointed out that one reason rate increases have not been approved is due to a lack of analysis or studies by the transport companies.

“In Playa del Carmen there were a couple of cases where a tariff schedule was published, however, Imoveqroo inspectors went to the plaza and removed it, since there was no such increase or official authorization,” he noted.

In July, Imoveqroo inspectors removed an illegal public transport rate schedule from a Playa del Carmen shopping mall.

“We will carry out operations in the different municipalities and if we confirm that this increase in the rate exists, there will be fines for the operators who are charging these unauthorized rates,” he said.
